9 month old low iron

Anonymous
My son had his 9 month appt last week and had the finger prick for iron/lead. His pediatrician called to tell me that his level came back at 6.0 and they like it to be 10+. We do BLW and he eats pretty much everything we eat including meats (he loves chicken, red meat, etc.) and also eats beans (black beans, chick peas), broccoli, eggs, spinach, etc. so we were surprised his iron is low. He’s also on breastmilk. His ped is starting him on an iron supplement but is having us do a redraw in a month or so.

Has anyone else had their 9 month old come back with low iron?

Mine did. He eats almost no meat still. He loved his iron pills. Still asks for them and he’s 3! He’s totally fine.

My son is just 8 months so I haven't had his iron tested yet, but my ped told me it's really hard for babies to get enough iron from food alone, regardless of their diet.

With a 6, you should be rechecking in 2 weeks to see if there is any response. That is very low just to be dietary related.

Are you taking an iron supplement?

Op here: no but I honestly probably should. I’ve always had low iron issues and it was super low during pregnancy. Took a supplement my whole pregnancy and until probably 6 weeks PP but stopped.
