Substitution for cumin?

Anonymous
Making a green chicken chili (with tomatillos, hatch chilis and jalapeño) and would like to sub something for the cumin (it calls for 1Tbs). Suggestions?

I just leave it out. I am not a fan. Or maybe add chili powder?

Cumin is for giving a smoky taste. My substitution would be ground up coriander seed powder (Coriander is cilantro), some paprika and smidge of clove powder for some smell. Maybe even mushroom powder for umami taste.

Cumin is not giving a spicy hot taste, so I would not try anything that adds heat to the dish.

Sorry, read the recipe. Just add some cilantro (herb) while cooking. It will add a good note that matches the sourness and heat of your dish.

Adobo. And no salt. adobo has salt.

Can add pinch of cinnamon too. Gives a Mexican flavor. My usual mix is chili powder, cumin, Adobo, pinch cinnamon.

clove is nasty to me unless like a pumpkin creation

You can leave it out. And no cloves!

Just leave it out. I cook with a lot of cumin but many times leave out of dishes entirely bc DH is not as used to eating it as I am

Curry powder. Cumin is a main ingredient.

Cumin tastes like human sweat.

Cumin is delicious. Have you tried it roasted? The flavor improves.

I’d do 1/2 ground coriander and 1/2 smoked paprika as a sub
