Thought this was a nice WaPo article and the pics look delicious. Any recommendations?
Years ago I ate at Kai, in Chandler south of Phoenix and thought it was great, but haven't had the opportunity to return. Even longer ago, I ate lunch at the Hopi Cultural Center, and the hominy and lamb stew I had there is a very fond memory. I've also really wanted to try Cafe Santa Rose in Tucson, but haven't had a chance yet. (Sorry my recommendations are all Arizona based.) |
| What are you asking? For recommendations for indigenous cuisine restaurants anywhere? |

Whoops—forgot to link the WaPo article:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/2023/02/15/native-american-restaurants-sean-sherman/?itid=hp_lifestyle_p014_f001 No real reason to ask but my two favorites weren’t on the list, so it made me think there are likely more great Native American restaurants out there, and thought we could share! |
| The Smithsonian Native American museum cafe is pretty good. |

Plus 1 for the Smithsonian Cafe. The stations correspond with different types of food traditions and different areas of the country, so it’s a good place to go with multiple people so you can share some of the dishes.
The best food that I’ve had in the area has been at pow wows. The Baltimore American Indian Center would be a good resource. |
To add: Not a restaurant exactly, but Tillicum Village on Blake Island near Seattle has a program that includes a cultural presentation and a delicious meal. The roasted salmon is wonderful, and the bread is possibly the best I’ve ever eaten. |
It used to be. |
Yeah, it’s not what it once was. The Mitsitam Cafe cookbook is great, though, as is Sioux Chef, by Sean Sherman, who was quoted in that article. |
| I got takeout from Tocabe in Denver a few years ago and enjoyed it! |

Noooooooo!!!! I’m so sorry to hear that! That was probably my favorite Seattle area day trip. The boat ride, a little nature, a little culture, a little shopping, and truly delicious food. Bummer. Sigh. |
I’m sorry to hear that. Pre-COVID, the Mitsitam Cafe was one of my standard meet-up spots with out of town friends. Thanks for recommending the cookbooks. I guess this will motivate me to be a more adventurous cook. |
