Checking your metabolism with doctor

Anonymous
I've read this advice quite a few times on this forum. What exactly happens when you do this? What is the doctor testing for? And are you given medication? Or some other treatment?

They do standard blood work for thyroid and maybe cortisol. Typically don’t find anything wrong because you’re likely just eating too much. Lol. I have hashimotos and medication wasn’t a miracle. Still required diet and exercise.

THIS. People always look at the most obvious reason for being overweight last.
There are some people who gain due to health issues, but the remaining 90+% just eat more than they are willing to admit to themselves.

FWIW, I was shocked when a doctor told me that PCOS was caused by eating too much and being overweight. Rather than the other way around. But on reflection, he was right.

That doesn't help that much, once it's already happened, though.

They are absolutely not the norm.

Thyroid definitely matters. My kid has graves and it was pretty terrifying how quickly she was losing weight while eating a ton. A well functioning thyroid is very important.
