My 4 year old was recently diagnosed with pneumonia. She seems pretty happy and energetic still, just has a nasty cough and a mild fever (which only started about 3 days ago). I was confused because I thought pneumonia was pretty serious, but she barely seems sick.
Has anyone else had experience with this? I guess I’m not sure how worried I should be… is this a common thing that kids get? |

Did you child have an Xray? That's how its usually diagnosed, seems odd to Xray under these circumstances.
I would not say its super common, but one of my children had it. 105 fever and bad cough. |
No, diagnosed only based on symptoms and listening to her lungs. She didn’t have a temperature in the office (but at home we measured it to be about 100.5). |
| My 2 yo had that kind pneumonia a few years back. Just follow the doctors instructions. And bring the kid back in if they get worse. Mine was fine too. |
| Google "walking pneumonia." It is a less serious form of pneumonia. Kids with walking pneumonia feel fine, but they still need to be treated with antibiotics. Pediatricians can diagnose walking pneumonia by listening to your child's lung without taking an X-ray. |
| How worried you should be... No need to panic. We live in the First World with antibiotics. Most children recover well if they are on treatment as per doctors' instructions. But I think you should carefully watch her until she fully recovers. If she experiences shortness of breath, chest pain, or high fever, go to an ER. |
| My son had pneumonia 3 times before age 7. It was never scary. Lots of fluid and rest. Mine is now a strapping teen with strong lungs! |
| Dc got pneumonia in preschool but got better quickly with antibiotics; the major problem during treatment was strong diarrhea. In our case diagnosis was done with listening to the lung and other symptoms (if I remember correctky fever and even vomit) |
