1500 mile road trip with EV: 12 stops and no heat

EVs are currently worthless:

Teslas would have fared prob baby better, but what a joke. Driving in cold weather significantly reduces range, which requires driving around without heat in order to preserve range. Infrastructure for charging is almost non-existent in many parts of the country, and it takes loooooong amounts of time to get a descent charge.

Have fun charging 12+ times next time you need to go on a road trip, lol.

Whew! Very eye-opening article. It has crossed my mind about buying an EV vehicle. However, this article just gave me reasons to ponder on that some more🧐

Thanks for the interesting article OP.

This seems kinda like a nothingburger. It's not required to drive around without heat, that's just what this driver chose to do out of anxiety.

I've had anxiety about getting gas on long road trips and turned off accessories to preserve fuel for fear that I would run out before getting to the station. Long road trips require planning for stops and fuel.

I love my rav4 Prime. Best of both worlds. About 700 miles per tank. Typically full electric Monday - Friday, 50% electric on weekends.

You lost me at Kia EV. They don't have supercharging network in the US like Tesla. No wonder.

Many Tesla owners in FB group made long road trip without any problem at all. It was enjoyable, according to them.

Did my 80 year old mother write this article? Whenever I express interest in EVs, she talks about running out of charge on a big trip. What big trip?

I have a 15 minute commute each way.

I never envision driving from Michigan to Florida, like the reporter. We fly places on vacation and rent cars at our destination.

It makes more sense to select a car for my daily needs.

Exactly.
We just bought an EV and so many people have asked how we would handle long road trips. What long road trip? We have none planned any time soon and have already bought plane tickets for our summer vacations.
If we did, for some reason, need or want to do a long road trip, we could rent a car without a problem.

My BIL/SIL say this all of the time. They like it because they can stop and shop at outlets. No thanks!

Agree. EVs are great for day-to-day driving, not road trips.

- own 2 EVs

We own an EV and use it to drive around town. It rarely gets below 80% charge. We just plug it in at night in our garage. Not even a special charger -- the regular 110v wall outlet.

They made 3 charging stops/day. Even on a regular road trip in our non-EV, we'd make that many stops/day just for bathroom and rest breaks. Most chargers on highways are at gas stations or similar.

Who buys an EV to go on road trips? It's a car to save gas commuting to work and running errands at this point.

EVs don’t save money on gas. I saw a study that included extra cost to buy plus cost of electric and per mile costs more than a gas powered car.

We've had EVs since 2018. Our electric expense has been WAY lower than our gas expense. They also were in the same price range of our other cars (we weren't buying a Model X).

For a big, long road trip, we rented a van. Before we had EVs, we also rented a van.

Who buys a car to do car things? What, are you crazy?

Next, you'll be telling us buying and EV pickup truck that loses huge amounts of range is stupid, because who would buy a pickup truck to do pickup truck things?
