This will be a third car for our teens to share. Deciding between a 3 year old CRV with 36k miles or a new HRV. Almost exact same price.

If certified pre-owned I'd get the CRV, just that much more substantial. But the HRV would be fine, too.

I am against large cars for teens. The teens are likely to kill other people with that.

We test drove a CRV about that age for our teen and she said it was too big, so we got her a Fit. HRV would have probably been OK.

I would agree. We have a CRV. I’d probably want to get my kids something smaller. An added bonus of smaller vehicles is that it creates a natural limit on how many other kids can fit.
