when do you get the title to your house?

Trying to sort out the estate of a deceased family member, but cannot find the title to her house.
I didn't get my car title until it was paid off - is it the same with homes?
Conversely to the above, I've also heard some people don't get the title until they ask for it - and many people don't think to ask for it.

Yes, the bank holds the title til the mortgage is paid off.

Is the house in question mortgaged? If not, your relative may have had a safe deposit box where important documents like this are stored.

If you have a mortgage, I think it depends on the state whether you hold it or the bank. call your bank.

after you own it outright. as long as there is a mortgage, they hold the title.
