Selling car privately to out of state buyer - License plate

Anonymous
We are in VA. An out of state buyer is interested in buying our car (private sale). Buyer wants to drive the car back to their home state with our license plates and then ship them back to us. Is that ok? Anyone sold your car to an out of state buyer and if so how did you deal with it. Thanks

Technically it is against the law. You are supposed to take the plates down upon sale and return them to dmv. If the person gets into an accident with your plates you might get involved as well. Some people do that and let the buyers drive their cars with their plates but I guess they are taking some risks.

No.. They can get a transporter tag from their home state and place it on the vehicle when they take possession.

Against the law OP

Do not do this. If they have an accident you are libel.

OP Here. Thanks for the replies. When I check Virginia DMV, it says to remove the plates. Good to know. Did anyone create a "Bill of Sale"?

I mean I might do that if they gave me a cash deposit of a couple thousand dollars to make sure they really sent it back but even then probably not because of the liability issues.

Plus IIRC my insurance dated the cancellation of my policy from the date of my plate return receipt— they wouldn’t let me cancel without that.

I don’t even want to pay for their electronic tolls.

I did. Just typed I such and such sold the car to such and such for that much. It felt redundant as all this info is also on the title that you sign over but the buyer wanted it

Yes, write a bill of sale. In MD, there is a printable one on the mva website. Maybe the same in VA.

Either deliver the car or tell then they'll need a temp tag. Ive aslo seen people just wing it and go no tag if its a short trip but make sure the sale is complete before they leave (so its "their car").

we sold our car to someone out of state, they brought their own plates and we kept ours. do not let them take your plates

Omg. Do not do this. Also make sure they do not give you a fake cashiers check. Had this happen to a friend.
