| As we plan ahead and consider moving, we wonder which of these two high schools would be an easier transition for kids coming from a small K-8. We worry about going from a small school to such a big one, but would appreciate any tips or feedback on making it work and if there are any reasons that one of these schools would be a better fit for that specific transition. |
| In terms of the neighborhoods that feed the schools, I know there are some very tight communities that feed BCC which could make the transition easier if you would then already know people from the neighborhood. This may also be true for Whitman, which I am less familiar with. |
| My ds went from Norwood middle school to Whitman. And I thought it would be, and was, basically a disaster. We then moved him to st Andrews in Delaware ( boarding-fantastic) and he also repeated 9th grade because he was super young. Omg he is now going to graduate top of his class and having had a fantastic ( even including covid shutdowns ) experience in learning and social / growth development. If a family can find a way to swing it ( and SAS has lots of $ available for aid) look into this. |
| know several people who sent their kids to a small k-8 in the district, and the kids went on to BCC. They seem happy. I think they tried to get the kids to know some other kids in the neighborhood etc that would be at BCC. |
What went wrong? |
| Op here. Thanks for the feedback so far. I am also worried about the transition. We have a few years to go, though, so I'm hoping we can start preparing for it. For the PP from Norwood, ai would love to know more about what specifically was a disaster, if anything could have been avoided, and if you wanted Whitman initially or just sensed up there, and if Norwood offered guidance throughout the process. |
Your thread should be moved to the MCPS forum. Ask the moderator to move it to the MCPS forum. |
It is in that forum, isn't it? |

OP here- we are coming from Norwood as well. Thank you. |
Um, I am the OP, I didn't write the above comment, and we are not coming from Norwood (but from a similar environment, so PP's thoughts are certainly relevant). |
OP you should read some threads on Whitman. Like the rest of MCPS they grade 90% on testing 10% on homework. And for the most part homework is not looked at in detail and feedback is scant. There is very little actual speaking of foreign language in the FL classrooms. It's a hot house environment. |
| But what exactly made the transition difficult? Social aspects like making friends? Academics? The sheer size? |
This seems like a total random comment. |
Only seems random if you're a total moron, otherwise it's an insight into the way the school works. |
