Filled bao buns

How difficult are they to make? I found a frozen one I really like but my grocery store of course now isn't carrying them. I can figure out the filling, it's just the bread part. Does anyone have any recipes? I'm a confident/experienced baker/cooker.

If you want another frozen option, the ones at Trader Joe's are great.

99 ranch has a ton of fresh and frozen varieties.

They are not hard to make but require the right steamers (the big stacking kind). The steamers take up a lot of space.

I don't mind a lot of work if I can get a bunch done in a big batch and freeze myself lol. I do this for some other favorites every few months. Do you have a recipe you can share?

Oh I love these! They are time consuming, but not difficult to make. I started with this recipe - https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/oct/14/mushroom-bao-recipe-chinese-bun-meera-sodha-vegan
My kids love them so I have since started adding egg to the dough, to add some additional nutrition.
I remember seeing on some Asian food blogger's site that she uses frozen biscuit dough in a pinch, too. The name escapes me.

Please don’t with the egg and biscuit dough unless you’re making a hot pocket, not a bao. -Chinese person

The bread part is super easy and pretty standard. My 12 year old made custard buns, and the initial couple were not great looking, but the shaping wasn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be.

Costco sells Okami brand BBQ pork bao. It's in the refrigerator/deli section.

+1

We make them at home, and we use the Woks of Life recipe. It takes a minute to get the hang of folding, but once you do, it’s super easy. It’s fun to experiment with fillings. I definitely recommend getting a bamboo steamer to make them.
