Trying really hard not to overthink this. My DD is currently in 6th grade and made her course selections today. She really wants to take a communications elective. She’s taking all honors, but will take pre-algebra next year; her teacher did not recommend her for Algebra 1 in 7th grade. She really excels in her English classes, so I feel like communications is a waste of time in middle school. I’m encouraging her to start foreign language now so she will have more time in high school if she wants to pursue yearbook, newspaper, etc. Of course I am currently the meanest mom for even suggesting starting foreign language in 7th grade.
Should I let her take communications knowing she will love it even if I think it’s a total waste of time? |
You get to pick 2 electives. One child ended up with a foreign language and art. |
What does she say interests or excites her most about communications? What has she heard about the class? |
Hi here is a Prospective from an LCPS rising 9th grader. I think that starting a Foreign language in 7th grade is a good idea this year in 9th grade I am going to be taking the first year of a Foreign language and I regret not starting a Foreign language in 7th grade. The only thing is that the world language is for HS credit and will go on her HS transcript and will be apart of her HS gpa but if she struggles it can be expunged from her HS transcript at the end of 7th grade. |
Yes but One of them has to be a fine arts elective and both the foreign language and communication studies would not count towards that. |
She has a budding interest in journalism. She loved participating on the morning news in elementary school, she loves listening to podcasts, NPR, etc. she has not heard anything specific about the class. Her fine art is chorus, so it is a choice between the communications class and foreign language. You can choose coding too, but she has absolutely no interest in that. |
Let her take communications now if it's something she enjoys. It's middle school. Let her have fun. She'll have to take plenty of classes she has no interest in in high school. |
What middle school? |
At our LCPS middle school, all "honors kids" take foreign language starting in 7th. The kids who don't are less studious. |
+1 If you want her peer group to be more studious, I would choose this. My child struggled in classes where more kids were goofing off etc. It's not just the one class; as you can imagine, one class in your schedule can determine when you take all the other classes, so you end up with the same kids in a lot of your classes based on your math and elective. |
Are there any clubs she could do, or start, around communications? |
Math and BOTH electives, not just foreign language but also band/chorus/etc. There are only so many ways to make the master schedule so all of this plays a part. |
