| It's popped up a couple of times recently, but I haven't seen much detail. Anything you can tell me about this school? It looks beautiful. Had honestly not really heard about it until I saw someone mention it, but it seems like a college one of my kids might like. (Unsure of major, B+ student with decent test scores, and very good athletic achievements and ECs.) |
| Check their financials, meaning how much money the school has not tuition. We weren’t sure about that. Look at TCNJ instead or Seton Hall. |
Thank you! TCNJ is on her list; Seton Hall is too urban for her. |
| I found this write-up to be helpful: https://educatedquest.com/educated-quest-college-profiles/drew-university-njs-national-liberal-arts-college/ |
Cool resource! Thanks! |
| similar schools would be Fairfield, Seton Hall, Northeastern, Clark, and Quinnipiac |
She's not getting into Northeastern, but a couple of the others are on her list, thanks! |
My DH went to Drew and those aren't similar at all. Maybe Clark but not the others. Drew is less than 2,000 kids, LAC, gorgeous suburban setting, one of those towns that everyone in the Real Estate forum wants to move to, with a cute walkable downtown full of shops less than an hour from Manhattan on the train. |
It’s also not similar academically. Our neighbor did not get into Rutgers and got a branch campus for Penn State but got into Drew. And no, not a special computer major. Business / sports marketing major. |
|
My DD looked at it because it's one of the LACs that participates in a 3+2 masters in environmental science with Duke (other nearby participants include Washington College, Gettysburg, Franklin & Marshall) https://nicholas.duke.edu/academics/masters-programs/cooperative-college-3-2
They did seem to have great resources for ES. I really liked it but DD ultimately didn't apply. Seemed to be a lot of talk about going into NYC as a popular student activity and DD really hates NYC so it just didn't seem like the right fit. She ended up at a very rural school. |
| TCNJ is way better than Drew. 87% grad rate vs 60%. Not even close. |
| I spent Thanksgiving with two current students and they were both delightful! One is from DE, the son of a friend of mine, and the other is from San Francisco. They both really enjoy the school and are active in theatre. My next door neighbor, a pediatrician, also attended Drew. I looked at it closely for my son who is now a junior in college. They offer good merit and the student body is much more diverse, particularly socio-economically, than most other small universities. They’ve had some challenges with financials and last I knew, we’re looking at selling off some of their land to put Drew on sounder financial footing. They have several different programs that allow students to work and / or study in NYC. |
According to what? These are all way bigger except for Clark. |
Agreed, I think TCNJ is a great school that definitely does not get DCUM love. |
The campus itself is also beautiful. There are oak trees everywhere and there's a forest arboretum on campus. The NJ Shakespeare Theatre is based there, so there are great opportunities for seeing shows, and as mentioned NY is so closeby too. |
