Tips for improving dishwasher performance

My dishes just don’t seem to be getting clean. I’ve tried a vinegar rinse, but still, my dishes are cloudy. Thanks for any tips you can share.

Add Lemishine.

make sure the holes in your rotating water jet blades are not clogged with debris, change out your machine's oil trap/filter (looks like the cup thing in the first picture in this article: https://www.thespruce.com/how-to-clean-a-dishwasher-filter-5085457), use cascade platinum pods.

When I’ve used Jet Dry, it seems to leave my glassware clearer, but my impression is that it leaves a chemical residue. I decided I’d rather have cloudy glasses.

Add Lemishine (works with your regular dish detergent). Lemishine is superior to Jet Dry & cascade Platinum (but you can add Lemishine to cycles which use Cascade).

Make sure water is hot prior to running dishwasher

Does yours have a filter that needs regular cleaning? My dishes don’t get as clean when that is mucked up. I usually have to pull it out and give it a good rinse every few months.

I'm having the same problem my glasses and clear glass plates look terrible.

I’m diligent about cleaning out my filter. I will look at the holes in the blades to make sure they aren’t clogged. I typically use Cascade from Costco. I’ll try the Lemonshine and report back.

Also, I always prewash my dishes so they are pretty darn clean when I load the dishwasher and I also clean my dishwasher regularly (the inside edges of the door, rubber seals, etc. ).

Try the better detergent. My dishwasher only cleans well with expensive pods.

Turn up the temp of your hot water. Unfortunately for my glasses to be clean, the water is too hot for my hands at the sink but I have gotten used to it.

None of them work very well anymore because of the lack of phosphates. Try cascade fryer boil out or bubble bandit detergent. Both are on Amazon and work great!

This. Everyone thinks their dishwashers are broken, but it’s the lack of phosphates in the detergent. Lemishine or other citrus products help, but if you really want to see a difference, get a tub of trisodium phosphate (tsp) from the hardware store and put a tiny amount (1/4 tsp) in with your soap. Also works in the laundry (I don’t use it with everything, but I couldn’t figure out why my white sheets were so yellow despite soaking in oxyclean, etc, and finally tried washing with a bit of tsp. Solved the problem.)

Don’t get me started on the phosphate thing — the amount of phosphate in the detergent was tiny, and the real source of the phosphate problem in river and streams is run off from farms. But Washington State found it was easier to ban it in detergent and pretend you were doing something. Detergent with phosphates isn’t illegal everywhere, but the manufacturers don’t want to make different products for different states, so here we are.

How old is your dishwasher? When the one that came with our house (and old Kenmore - manufactured by Whirlpool) I tried everything suggested, including taking it apart to make sure it was really clean and when it finally crapped out we replaced it with an 800 series Bosch and it was life changing.

If your dishwasher is newer, READ THE MANUAL and load the dishes and use the recommended detergent and rinse aid.

With modern detergents, you shouldn't rinse the dishes clean - they clean using enzymes and need something to work on. Just scrape and load.

This still doesn’t help with the cloudy glasses. But TSP or those two detergents mentioned do.
