Blair CAP and SMAC magnets - how much interaction?

Do the kids take any classes together? Any magnet functions that pull them together socially?

Sure they both can take non-magnet classes together like PE or FL.

You’d think they wouldn’t interact much, since the classes they take as part of the magnet and with the rest of the school population are almost opposite. That said, my SMCS kid seems to have quite a few CAP friends. I have no idea how they met, but I don’t think it was in class.

They do not have many classes together because the magnets classes or regular classes are almost opposite. Since CAP is mostly a 2 year thing, I htink there is more ovelap in 11 and 12.

The two programs seem to imply that kids in both programs take the same English and History Classes outside of the program during all 4 years. Is that wrong? Honors then AP?

CAP students take those classes just with other CAP students

We found very little interaction because if how their program classes are grouped. At least in the early years of the programs.

in 9/10 they would have classes like PE, foreign lang, stuff like that. in 11/12 more classes together: aps, electives etc… plus Clubs! lots of clubs and sports together. Plus, the newspaper and debate is Mostly Magnet and Cap. Not that they have to be, but they just are. My kids know many kids and both group. remember, they are the only 2 during the 9th period.

My SMAC kid seems to have lots of CAP friends through activities, but only started having some overlap in classes now in 11th grade.

Some of the kids probably know each other from MS. There are quite a few former TPMS magnet kids in CAP. I’m sure marching band and music programs have both magnet and CAP kids too.

There's very little interaction and the chances of overlap in classes is really small. There are no functions that pull them together socially.
DC knows no one in CAP.

I take that back. DC says they know and interact with a couple of CAP kids very superficially in clubs but that's it.

They are required to take an extra class for both programs so my magnet child ends up spending time on the afternoon bus with kids in the CAP program. One neighborhood CAP kid is now a close friend.

Also there is plenty of interaction with non-magnet kids in all the non-STEM classes.
