| How intense is the workload? |
| Intense. Why would you start your 13-14yr old with a college level course. Why are you that mom? |
Oh stop. It's a common thing for advanced students to take. My bright kid is bored out of her mind in "advanced English", I'm glad she's getting a challenge in an AP history course. |
| The typical AP course for 9th graders is AP Gov or AP US History. Not AP World History which is reserved for junior or senior year. |
NP. At our school, the normal progression is AP World in 10th, then AP US History in 11th. So OP's scenario would be a year early, but not out of order. |
| Who the hell wants to take an AP history course their first year of high school. Instead of boring, you do intense boring? |
OP here. Am I that “mom”? I don’t know you tell me. My kid who will already have a very demanding magnet course load wants to take AP history. I was wondering if I should gently discourage him. But ultimately it’s up to him. Certainly not something I’ve raised. |
| Oh also, just raised its AP US history, not world. I misremembered. |
Well that makes more sense. Yes, he can take AP US History. At our school they encourage AP Gov for 9th graders and AP US History for 10th graders, but apparently this order varies by school according to a PP. |
| APUSH is a lot of reading. |
Is it a lot of writing? Reading won’t be an issue. Lots of big writing projects might be. |
| My kid took APUSH as freshman and is now in AP World as a junior. She finds AP World much, much easier (less time consuming) than APUSH, though it may vary by school. |
NP. It is not common for advanced students in MCPS. Ususally they take APUSH or AP Gov. I’ve taught both and had my own kids take them. AP World is usually taken in 11th grade in MCPS. |
Yes. And, if taught well, it’s timed writing in class. |
Not true at all schools. Ours does not allow APUSH in 9th. Only AP NSL and AP computer science are allowed in 9th. |
