Elementary school recommendations

Can anyone highly recommend their elementary school? I am looking to move in Silver Spring or decent commuting distance. Anyone with personal experience who can recommend their school would be helpful. Kids in K and 3rd.

We are happy at Burtonsville ES. It’s the north end end of Silver Spring. It’s a focus school so smaller class sizes in K-2. Teachers have all been great so far ( son in 4th) and there’s a very low turnover of teachers. PTA is getting more active. The playground could use some work but that’s really the only downside for us.

Forest Knolls ES. Terrific school community, teachers, neighborhood.

Happy at SCES but live close to Highland View, which neighbors seem to like too. Previously lived close to rock Creek Forest, and people loved it there too

Love Highland View! Small school with great new principal.

Oakland Terrace is great. Also nearby, Flora singer gets good reviews too.

What about Rock View?

Mcps curriculum is the same across the county with very few exceptions. Oakland Terrace has Spanish immersion.

The primary difference at schools: socioeconomics and race.

^^^

And you can see the socioeconomics and race data on the mcps website, school by school.

I would say the primary difference between schools is the principal. They make or break the school.

I would never want my children to attend the school I work at due to the extreme behaviors in the classrooms. People can pretend they’re all the same but they’re not. My school doesn’t even offer compacted math as there’s no peer cohort for it. Getting recommendations is a good idea.

Can you share more about what they do thst can be so make or break? Despite attending public K-12 I don't really have a great idea of how they influence things.

Maybe you should do a better job managing it.

We have been happy with Rosemary Hills, which is a K-2 school on the west side of Silver Spring--especially under the new principal.

Half the students go to North Chevy Chase for 3-5 and the other half to Chevy Chase. Ultimately they all end up at Silver Creek MS and BCC high school.
