The MCCPTA introduced a resolution on digital balance, basically getting back to more paper learning like textbooks. Does the MCCPTA have any influence?

| That would be welcomed in my family. We find that it takes kids longer to flip back-and-forth and to do everything digitally. Whereas on paper, an assignment might take 15 minutes, it can take twice as long on their chrome books. The screens are tiny and toggling back-and-forth from different tabs, drawing little boxes, and highlighting. Everything digitally is a waste of time. |
| Hallelujah! I could not agree more. But how much teeth do MCCPTA resolutions have in changing the ways of MCPS? |
| It likes MCPS and the BoE generally ignore the MCCPTA.....and frankly the MCEA too for that matter. MCPS and the BOE seem to reinforce and rubber stamp one another. |
| Ten years ago, we could have had civil and rational discussion about textbooks. Today, it would be impossible, even in MoCo, to select textbooks without a protracted and rancorous fight. |
This does not prepare our children for tomorrow's workplace. What is wrong with these people? Are they luddites? |
| Textbooks would be nice but some of that is just nutty. |
I'm an advocate for scrolls. The printed materials involve technology which we all know is evil. |
Yes, they need to advocate something so instead of safety they want to get rid of technology. There needs to be a balance. Textbooks would be great but things like writing assignments are far better on the computer. |
I disagree with your assumptions in the first sentence. And as for "writing assignments are far better on the computer," what's your evidence? The linked file has a bunch of evidence-based recommendations on it. nothing specific to writing, so I'd be open to seeing what might exist to prove your point vs their proposals. Anecdotally, I'm connected with some college English professors on FB (knew one of them growing up, her grad school friends comment on her posts because they're profs at various places), and they're seriously lamenting the analytical and writing skills of their current college students. It's like the skill level fell off the cliff in the last couple of years. Covid learning loss, perhaps, but the ability to cut & paste or use AI to complete your sentences...let alone the new chatbot thing...all these trends are not helping students' writing abilities. |
The resolution doesn't ban tech. It literally calls for balance and a mixed approach rather than the tech-first and tech-only model that's in place right now in many instances. There is a mountain of research btw that shows writing things by hand is way more effective for retention and learning. That doesn't mean everything needs to be hand-written, but it does speak to intentionally incorporating handwritten work alongside digital work for maximum outcomes. |
A mountain? More like an anthill. |
