I finally ventured back to the gym after 2+ years of home workouts. Yay!
I'd like to add a swim day to my exercise routine, and am looking for a swim cap. The old Speedo one I had, that I hadn't used in years, made my head hurt after 5 minutes of wearing it. Any recommendations for a swim cap to keep my longish (mid-back) hair out of the way in a bun on my head, that won't leave me with a headache? |
For me the silicone caps pull my hair and skin less and reduce the pain - no specific brand preference. As a bonus, they last longer. |
What do you want the swim cap to do? I like nylon / cloth ones to keep my hair out of my face. The rubbery ones are painful, and don’t keep my hair dry.
If all you want is to contain your wet hair, get one made from cloth. I’ll post a link in a bit to show you what I mean. |

I got into swimming laps for the first time in my life last summer. A fellow swimmer recommended the Speedo "Long hair" silicon swim cap. I got it and use it twice a week. It's always going to be tight on your head, but it doesn't bother me. I have long-ish hair that I have in a ponytail that I pull into a short-sort-of-bun. Then I put the cap over it.
My hair still gets wet, but it does not still smell of chlorine the next time I get it wet at home. Basically, the cap reduces the amount of chlorine my hair absorbs because my hair is not stewing in the chlorine for 35 min, and the cap gives a bit of aerodynamics to my swimming. I like it enough that I bought a back up for when the first one breaks. |
As a pp said, they make caps specifically for long hair. That might help. My swimmer kid prefers silicone over latex for comfort. And to cut down on chlorine smell/damage (since no cap is going to keep all of the water out), wet your head in the shower before putting the cap on. |
Silicone is more comfortable than latex |
Thanks all. Yes, it’s mainly to keep my hair from sitting in chlorine the entire time. I know they don’t keep hair completely dry. I’ll try the silicone one. |
As another PP suggested, and as my hair stylist told me: Wet your hair and maybe even put on a bit of conditioner before you go swimming — since apparently your hair will absorb more of what you put on first. There are also good swimmers shampoos out there that help with the chlorine. |
