I believe that far too many students are encouraged to apply to university, and that these students (and our economy) would be better served if schools and parents were allowed to acknowledge that not everyone is "smart", but that electricians, plumbers, and the like are honorable, valuable members of society who essential tasks, and there is nothing shameful about preparing for these careers if one is not academically inclined.

I'm a teacher. You would never guess my opinions on these matters if you knew me. I am great at learning/spouting the latest buzzwords and hyperbole, but inside I know that I (and the school system) is doing many children a great wrong. I would lose my job if I did not adhere to the prevailing attitudes and beliefs about education among my school's administration and parents. I feel really bad for several of my current high school seniors who have been placed firmly on the college path, and I know they will continue to struggle/probably fail in college. They would have made fine electricians or the like.

I went to high school back in the dark ages, the 1990s, and it's clear that I have ADD and I didn't need any accommodations or meds, but I did need help. A high IQ allowed me to get through, but I was flailing and I sucked at college. It's definitely real.

Me too. My parents still think I am just lazy.

I was lucky enough to have parents that had me evaluated in 1983 or 1984. I was diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADD.

The world isn't going to hell in a handbasket and things aren't getting worse. The 'good old days' weren't so fantastic.

My overly liberal "change the world" friends get on my freaking nerves, though I could never say it anywhere but an anonymous board. The whole -- after going to Duke Law School and working in biglaw for 3 yrs, I gave up the money to go to a fledging non profit bc I am really changes the lives of our clients . . . . Um yeah -- you tell yourself that. You gave up a sweet paycheck (and are not independently wealthy so it's not like money doesn't matter) and representing the people you represent may make you feel good but get a grip, it isn't changing anything.

I think 99% of parents who have kids in immersion schools where they don't speak the language at home are wasting their time.

Reminds me of an opinion I have that apparently is in the minority here: Money isn't everything.

So ready to unfollow the HONY guy on instagram. I don't care about this ghetto school. These kids aren't going to Harvard, let alone college.

I also wish it would become socially acceptable to tell kids that college isn't for everyone. It's ok to be a plumber or go to beauty school. We need those people more than we need another kid with a worthless communications degree who keeps her job at the Gap and eventually becomes manager because that makes more money than a journalist.

I'm totally ok with taking a cut from biglaw for a healthier/happier life and/or work you like better -- go in house, go to the gov't, go down the business road, whatever. I just don't get the ones who take the cut down to a salary of nothing bc they really feel SO much better litigating for the Legal Aid population rather than on behalf of Goldman Sachs. Give me a break.

You should definitely unfollow a site like HONY. It's not for you.

Then watching a McDonalds commercial means you eat fast food.

No. Viewing porn results in a sexual action like jerking off and typical the person gets some pleasure from doing so. Watch a McDonald's commercial doesn't make you feel full.

He usually does well in representing all classes, races, etc. But I'm to close to a few DC urban school teachers to know that this campaign is a road to nowhere and a lot of $$ wasted. I'm more interested in what a homeless guy ate for breakfast or a Wall Street guy's childhood.

Agree but I don't say a word to a living soul to anyone about this.

I also agree.

Are you a Boomer or Millenial?

Millenial but on the older side of Millenial so I'm not 22.

You are exactly what's wrong with the world. You can't wait for someone else to take care of the mess the world is in and you must do your part to make it better. Recycle, grow a garden, buy things second hand, donate items you won't use anymore. Stop living a disposable lifestyle and a life that revolves around you.
