I had some pop-up bins when we first got our minivan, for toddler toys, books, etc., but they just filled with junk, spilled drinks, and trash. Our kids are school aged now, but the best practice (which, I am not saying we are actually the best at) is to get the kids (and yourself) to bring things in from the car after every trip and put them away. And to not let trash build up.

I don't need/use bins for groceries, sports equipment, etc. We use designated totes or bags for pool supplies, soccer/baseball gear, library books, etc.

I have a folding bin thing and I like it. It holds some permanent things and I use it to carry things inside sometimes. I also like how easy it is to move it from the trunk to the seat if I need to clear either.

I could definitely just use the built in pockets but the bin thing works for me. Not necessary, for sure.
