Private & Independent Schools
Also, what are the principal similarities and differences between the schools? Thanks.
Holton is one of the best academic schools in the area.
Holton is Landon's sister school Starting in 6th grade, activities are scheduled for both schools to do some activities together such as games nights, dances or community service. In Upper school there is some opportunity to take classes together before the regular day starts. Landon also uses the Holton pool for the middle and upper school swim teams.Practices are separate from the girls.
Every since "The Slampig Slanders" the relationship is not as close as it used to be . . .
I think I heard that there was only one Holton middle-school dance with Landon this year, whereas there used to be more dances in a school year. It seems that Holton is inviting boys from other schools more often now. If I had a daughter at Holton, I would be wary if she were socializing with Landon boys.
The Holton/Landon connection is turning me off of Holton and I was seriously considering it (although I'm not sure we could afford it anyway).
I think Holton should dissociate itself from Landon and not be its sister schhol anymore.
A girls' school needs a brother school like a fish needs a bicycle.
there were at least 4 holton dances with landon this year plus a number of joint community service projects.
I've heard that the schools share tuition remission. For example, a teacher at Landon with a daughter at Holton receives remission there and vice versa.
One of the PPs - do not worry about avoiding Holton because of the connection. Holton is a fabulous school and will stay that way.
The schools have always had different academic and social reputations. I have lived between the two schools since 1969, and had many friends from both schools. Holton was always more academic and serious. Landon's academics are no better than public school (which is not bad), and the boys have always been stereotyped as rough and reckless. Sort of men who will eventually get what they deserve.
Not affiliated with either school but connected in the DC private-school community, I believe Holton has a much more academcially serious reputation than Landon. Landon has a reputation for being a jock school.
They stay in touch after graduation, and get together in groups at local downtown watering holes from time to time, staying connected through Facebook internet, etc. Alumni news makes clear they often marry one another. Our son has dated a Holton girl for a couple of years; his cousin (also Landon guy) dated a number of Holton girls more casually, and they remain good friends and get together when he's home from college. But they both dated Stone Ridge girls as well, and occasionally my daughter's NCS friends. Pretty typical.
Just went back and read some of the above postings. I doubt any of the posters know anything about Landon academics. Go sit in on the high school humanities class or an upper level math class at Landon. Better yet, see if you could pass it. Not to disparage Holton, it is a great school, far better in math and science than say, NCS, and we have ties to both--(NCS is incomparable at teaching writing skills, history languages.) But Landon is an academically excellent school, despite the insistence of some semi-crazed posters. I know you can't convince the "haters" but those in the know, know. One caveat: all bets are off if they get rid of Humanities, and I know this was on the agenda for some parents of sons who came acropper when they hit this subject in junior year. May they not prevail!
