Is it impossible to make high school basketball or lax teams in affluent areas if you never did travel/club teams? Think W schools in DMV area like Churchill or Whitman or WJ? |
| At a W, probably not unless your kid is an off the charts athlete |
| Yes quite impossible. Kids have private coaches plus they have been playing on travel teams. Do yes if your child wants to make a high school team they need to start playing more competitively from a young age |
| Basketball is harder because the team is so small. If your kid is athletic and willing to do a bit of practicing before the season starts I think JV lax might be easier. Different highschools have different strengths. If you name the school you are talking about people can give you better advice. |
Those kids are playing WCAC, you're still competing against travel kids, but not that level of travel kid |
What if they play another sport on travel team, like soccer or hockey, and they play recreational lacrosse or basketball through 8th grade, so they're a good athlete and playing a sport with some similarities at a travel level, but not experienced in that particular sport. Any chance of still making the high school team? |
Whitman |
Please don’t mix basketball with lax. Lax is definitely possible. Basketball probably not unless your kid is a genetic freak |
Disclaimer - my kids are young and we didn't have Lax where I grew up, so it's a sport I'm still trying to learn. However, we have a lot of wealthy, not terribly tall white kids in our town whose parents seem to be pouring a lot of money into lacrosse, which leads me to believe the high school basketball team would be easier to make than the high school lacrosse team. |
| Define "high school team". Varsity -- probably not. But certainly could have a chance at playing freshman or JV. |
