Summers During College

Did your children typically come home every summer while in college to work or for internships or did they go to other cities for this?

My dc, a junior in college, has come home and worked at restaurants over the summers for summers after freshman and sophomore year. This semester, they’re interning full-time in another city instead of taking classes (so won’t be interning this summer) but will likely go back to their college town this upcoming summer and take classes + work at their usual on-campus job.

Summer after freshman year DS worked locally. Now looking for an internship after sophomore year and applying widely, in DC and other cities. He's also considering study abroad options. I'd prefer that he do the study abroad. Doing it during the school year doesn't work well with his major and summer after junior year I think a real internship is important.

It depended on what their options were but none in summer after freshman year. It was for them to come home and chill.

Mine didn't do internships. Sometimes they came home to work or sometimes went to other areas.

Summer after freshman year mine had a paid internship in college town so stayed there and lived off campus. Upcoming sophomore summer is still TBD she’s applying for a bunch of internships and seeing what shakes out. Only real difference in her strategy at this point is summer after freshman year she wasn’t necessarily looking for things that had direct job related application, just something that was fun and interesting and paid where she would learn something new. This year she’s more interested in opportunities clearly related to future career path.

I stayed at school, did summer school, and worked extra hours. I never got invited to spend the summer at home! I was expected to work like crazy so I just stayed at school and studied and worked.

I came home to work bc I couldn’t afford extra summer classes (more tuition, more room/board). I could live at home for free and work FT+ to save up for the next semester.

summer after 1st year: all 3 kids came home and worked (lifeguard or day camp counselor)

summer after 2nd year: oldest and middle kids -- both stayed at uni and worked in a lab; youngest came home and was a camp counselor

summer after 3rd year: oldest and middle kids -- again, both worked at uni lab (both now in med school); youngest had a paid internship in another city on the east coast -- is now considering a job offer from this organization, though is also applying to grad school

First summer was COVID, he came home and worked locally. Second summer and third summer he stayed in the city his college is in and worked/interned/lived his life.

They did on campus research or interned starting the summer before college. They left the day after high school graduation and didn't return home except for brief holidays.
