Clark University--thoughts

Does anyone know anything about Clark University or Worchester, MA? DD was just accepted there. The school came up on her Naviance list and it was free to apply. Also, received merit

Thoughts?

There was a Clark thread just last week, I think.

I was the OP of the other thread. My dc is super interested. It feels very warm to me. Can’t wait to go visit.

I was just driving through Worcester yesterday thinking what a blah town it is....and yet I am really interested in Clark for my kid too. Plus there are bunch of other colleges in town so I imagine there's a pretty nice set of social opportunities. I have known about Clark for a long time, always thought of it as kind of a hidden gem. I think it's pretty well regarded in New England, may not have much name recognition in other parts of the country.

Its actually Worcester, MA. I graduated from Clark long ago. There were pros and cons. Academics and professors were good. It did not have big sports or much school spirit. The career planning office was weak in the late 1980s; I hope that has gotten better. I had friends get into top medical, law and business schools and into PhD programs.

Admittedly Clark isn't in the greatest section of the city, but there are parts of worcester that are beautiful. As a whole, it's a great food town (shrewsbury street is a must for your visit! so many awesome restaurants you can't go wrong), the market, awesome thrifting and a bunch of small bookstores. The Worcester Red sox / Polar park have also livened up the city. It's a great college town.

Daughter was a recruited athlete. We went and checked it out. UGH. Glad we went and saw for ourselves. The decision to check Clark off the list was easy. Dreadful town. Wasnt for us.

We visited last year. The school itself seemed warm and supportive--I bet DC would have gotten a lot more individualized attention than at the big public they ultimately chose. The town did seem depressing and campus seemed a little sleepy. Easy access to Boston was a plus. DC wanted a bigger, livelier place, but said they would happily have attended Clark if other options had not worked out.

Like many places, post-Christmas winter is absolutely the worst time to be driving through Worcester, and Clark's neighborhood while improving is a bit rougher. But Worcester really has been revitalizing the past 5-10 years. Agree with Shrewsbury Street for excellent, creative restaurants as well as classic train-car diners like the Boulevard. The Canal District near Polar Park is really fun as well (see Worcester Public Market, Water Street, and various pubs in the area.)
