DD might apply for this for next year. I’m not sure if it works the same in all schools, but the student government executive board (there are no officers) are elected from students in these classes (multiple sections). The leadership students together put on the beginning of the year kick-off event, Homecoming, all spirit weeks, International night, and numerous other events. There is no Homecoming committee that other students can join, for example - it’s all these kids doing the work.
Is this considered a co-curricular class? Could she list it (and how?) as an EC on the common app? She’s a junior, and the class requires a lot of non-class work. She’s got to weigh the cost/benefit of her commitments for next year. |
| There are many kids in the class at our school who are year round athletes and manage it fine. And, yes, other kids do volunteer and help with these events. |
… You just answered none of the questions. |
| Your daughters best bet is to ask the Teacher who leads the class. |

At our school leadership is 90% girls.

| Does anyone actually fact-check the common app? I'm not suggesting anyone lie or embellish, but does it really require approval to call it an EC? I would look big picture, decide what fits best where so you can mention them all, and just do it. |
| My sophomore is in leadership, and while we haven't done college applications yet, I can easily see listing something like "Lead coordinator for homecoming parade" as an extracurricular activity. |
Makes more sense and actually sounds more substantial to say “As a class officer and member of the leadership class, I coordinated…” |
If your kid takes the class and doesn't get chosen to head up anything, is it just a big whiff? |
