Neuropsych & ADOS

Anonymous
Please help me. I'm confused. I had a neuropsych that says autism. But I'm reading on this board that a neuropsych isn't sufficient to detect autism, and I need to add on an ADOS. Do I understand that correctly? Should I ask for an ADOS for confirmation of the diagnosis?

Also, I made the appointment with one person who was highly recommended, with the caveat from the referring doctor that the neuropsych was probably "too senior" to be doing the testing herself. Indeed, the person who did the test and report was a younger woman. The results were given to me in person by that both neuropsychs, the "senior" one and younger one. Is that typical? FWIW, I paid 7k, so I don't think it's one of those situations where I got a trainee to accommodate a lower budget.

The ADOS is a checklist. Its a good idea but not always necessary.

When we've done neuropsychs, it has included the ADOS. Usually, one day of testing is done by the more senior person and includes the WISC, executive function testing, and social cognition (including ADOS). The second day is academic stuff and is done by a junior person. There's also language testing that I think the junior person does, but I'm not sure.

What does the report say the basis for the autism diagnosis is?
