Looking for some info on Senior Experience. My DS is a senior at WL, but wondering how it works. Do seniors meet with their counselors to figure out programs that might be a good fit or is it more generalized? Such as, here's some guidelines and figure it out? When do students start looking for these? Are any of these experiences paid? Thanks so much for any insights! |
You’re pretty much on your own to figure it out. There are no meetings with the counselor.
DD was a lifeguard and just worked there extra hours for her senior experience. She was paid. W-L. |
Not OP, but I was wondering about the program too. When do seniors start looking for these positions? Anytime or is there a set date like April 1st or something? |
A member of the faculty is one of the Senior Experience coordinators. Info is usually posted on the school's website. Same process for Yorktown HS as well. |
That was DS's experience too. He got a retail job and it was a good push to get a job started for the summer. Now senior DD already has a summer job working at a sleepaway camp so I'm helping her think through places she might contact about a job shadow or non profits that might need some project done. |
The counselors will give a presentation to the seniors and send it to the parents (W-L). There are guidelines, but most things are approved. My kid started a part-time job that they were going to do over the summer so yes, they got paid. A lot of kids do this. Some travel (I have no idea how they get that approved, based on the guidelines they provide), some volunteer. Mostly they just want the seniors occupied after AP/IB tests are over so they're not being disruptive to the rest of the students who need to be in school. |
