Moving from NYC to DC suburbs...tell me why you like the DC suburbs

Please only share positive things. I need a morale boost! I’m gonna miss stepping out of my apartment and walking to my favorite coffee shops, restaurants, playgrounds, etc. I don’t mind driving but getting the kids in and out of car seats vs. taking them places in a stroller seems like a hassle. I know I’ll get used to it but would love to hear why you love living in this area!

Great Falls
Proximity to DC so easy on Metro
Schools are great ignore trolls
Can be at the beach or small mountains in 3 hours
Three airports to choose from to fly anywhere in the world
Lots of diversity

OP I have lived many places in the US I love the DMV Of course you will hear the opposite, but when I go away I love coming home to the DMV.

Grew up Manhattan and Long island.

I mean….if that’s the way you feel, why not stay in your place in DC? Plenty of people raise their kids in apartments.

I’m living in the suburbs right now due to the fact that I dated and then married a divorced dad who didn’t want to leave his kids school district. It’s soul deadening.

The bonus is I don’t have to smell smoke from neighbors. Also, the pools out here are nice. And it feels like there’s no crime. I’m sure there is, but it feels very safe.

Oh sorry

Haven’t had coffee yet!

You are moving from nyc

Why don’t you move to dc itself instead?

Have you already bought your house?

Some DC suburbs are walkable and more urban-feeling. Downtown Silver Spring, Bethesda, and Alexandria for instance.

I live in a low-key area of rockville. People are smart and down to earth. My kids don't freak out about having the right name brand clothes to fit in because it's not an huge competition. We live close to a beautiful hiking trail. I have a lot of really nice neighbors. Our community pool and swim team brings a lot of joy to my kids. Every place has its problems, but we are generally really happy here.

The car seat stroller stage is temporary, soon enough you'll be freaking out about your teenager learning to drive!

There are a lot of great nature centers and playgrounds in the suburbs.

I don’t understand why New Yorkers do this. They leave NY, move to a soulless suburb of another city and then complain nonstop how they hate X city. No, you hate the burns.

The air quality outside of the beltway is way better.

The amount of trees and fauna is fantastic.

There is access to everything and more. See Tyson’s corner.

You really think a New Yorker should move from an apartment in Manhattan to…..Rockville?!?

Coffee is important! DC would be OK but public schools aren’t great (right?) I’ve read about parochial schools but we aren’t religious at all. We would need a cheaper COL to comfortably afford private school.

OP here - I’m not from NY, I grew up in the suburbs elsewhere. I live there for school/jobs and am moving for a job as well.

I mean, people move from NYC to the NY/NJ suburbs all the time… sure they commute to NYC but they live in a house in the burbs.

I live in Ballston and walk or bike to everything, schools, parks, coffee, movies, metro, restaurants, rec center, ice skating, nature trails, library, doctor and dentist. I take the Vamoose bus that leaves from Rosslyn to NYC, I'm there in a few hours. Its not NYC but its just fine.
