WJ APEX Reach

Are there any APEX parents out there who know whether a student can drop down from Honors math and stay in the program??

I don't think a math progression is outlined, so my guess would be that that would be OK. Check with the school, though:

Can a transfer student (rising sophomore) join the apex program? I can’t seem to get any response from the school counseling office from this.

No, because they didn’t complete the 9th grade coursework.

My DS just asked me this math question today, I told him he had to take honors. I really don’t know but I want him to stay in the honors class. He is not struggling but he’s not exactly thriving either, but I don’t think going to regular will make much difference. At least taking honors gives a boost to the gpa.
As to the PP who asked if they can join later, the answer is no. They need to take APEX Biology and English in 9th.

Even if they’ve taken comparable courses their freshman year at the school where they’re transferring from? No way to test in?

Thank you for the help!

We were told no, no test in option.

Is your child rising 10 or 11?

After grade 10, there is really no benefit to being in the program because all of the cohorted classes are complete.

Regardless, honors math isn’t required. Precalc is significantly easier than honors precalc and at WJ you can take AP Calc AB with an A in precalc (maybe B too).

Honors Math not required to maintain APEX status.

My daughter is in Apex and only took honors geometry and honors algebra 2, then regular pre-calc and calculus with app A/B. It did not seem to impact her college acceptances.

You might see if any of the other special programs would be interesting to your child:
