How long does your RE recommend Prometrium after getting pregnant?

My RE told me to take Prometrium (200mg) 3 times per day until I am 10-12 weeks along. I'm curious how long other have taken Prometrium after getting pregnant. Did going off Prometrium have any side effects for your or the baby?

that is how long i took it. i didn't have any side effects, and not sure about the baby since i haven't delivered yet. but i've never heard of any...

FYI, I have a history of pre-term labor so I am on it through 36 weeks. 2x a day for the first 14 weeks, 1x a day until 36.

I was at SG and took Endometrin (a different form of progesterone) after my IVF cycles. For the successful cycle I stayed on Endometrin until about 11 weeks. They tapered down the dose gradually for a few weeks before then. I might be wrong about this, but my understanding is that your placenta takes over production of progesterone and whatever other hormones the baby needs well before then, so by the time you go off it you really don't need it anymore. The only side effect for me was that I stopped getting all of the yucky discharge that comes with Endometrin (and prometrium).

That was true for me as well. Took it until my first OB appointment at 10 weeks and then was advised to stop.

I'm just curious... did you all take the capsules vaginally or did you have to do the sub-muscular injections?

If everything is "normal," the placenta should take over by 12 weeks, so you really don't need supplemental progesterone after that point. If you have specific medical issues, like PP, you may be advised to continue it longer.

My RE wanted me to continue for 10-12 weeks if I got pregnant on a treatment cycle. I ended up getting pregnant on a "rest" cycle, so I wasn't on the prometrium during the 2WW, and when I went for my beta, my progesterone was fine, so I never ended up starting it with this pregnancy. I think many REs use it as a precaution and/or to help support the pregnancy, even for women who don't necessarily have low progesterone. I've had previous successful pregnancies and never needed supplemental progesterone for them, but the RE still insisted I take it during my treatment cycles.
