Cleaning Crisis - Advice needed - MOLASSAS

Anonymous
A bottle of molassas was placed on its side on the top shelf of my three shelf spice cabinet. Slowly over a month or so it has been leaking unbeknownst to me because it was just hitting the containers in the back. Many containers seem almost glued to the wooden shelf.

I understand this is going to be awful but is there a cleaning agent that will be effective here?

Time for a new spice cabinet. And lots of fresh new spices.

To get everything out: hot water. I would assume none of your spices are salvageable. Dubious about the cabinet.

It's molasses.

You scrape off as much as you can with a spatula, if there's any accumulation somewhere.

You prise up the containers by brute force. Then you take a sponge soaked in hot water to soften the molasses enough that you get the rest out, by scraping and scrubbing.

With enough elbow grease, you won't need to buy anything new. But if you don't want to make that effort, by all means, throw out your stuff and buy new.

Molasses are sugar in an aqueous solution, so a cleaning agent that is made to act on grease is not going to help. Warmth is what's needed to soften the stuff.

+1 I just went through this with honey. If you heat it, it comes up easily

No experience, but found this?

Cleaning Molasses from Solid Surfaces

When cleaning a molasses spill from any type of surface, first scrape as much of the syrup as you can into a disposable container using a spatula or butter knife. Clean the sticky molasses that remains from solid surfaces with 2 cups of hot water mixed with 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. The heat from the water will soften the molasses, making it easier for the soap to remove. Use a scrub brush on molasses spills that have become hard and gummy.

Scrape as much as you can off with a scraper. Use HOT water to scrub the rest. It should come off easily.

If this is what you call a cleaning crisis, OP, you're a very lucky person. I assume you don't have kids or pets

Vinegar. It will cut through anything. We had some molassas somehow spill on our spice rack and it came out

3 kids 7 and under and two dogs actually!

I have cleaned up plenty of gross stuff, but perhaps you don't know what molassas is like!

Thanks to everyone else i will go at it tonight, it will be painful but manageable to replace the spices, the cabinet would be very difficult!

Honestly, molasses is much harder. We replaced a shelf.

I like molasses, and I even know how to spell the word!

Such a spill would not be part of any crisis list of mine.
