I was surprised not to see a thread about this. But, in what is bad news for Virginia Governor Youngkin, Virginia Democrats have flipped State Senate District 7 which was vacated by Republican Jen Kiggans who was elected to Congress. Democrat Aaron Rouse defeated Youngkin-backed Kevin Adams.
Semafor quotes Youngkin from a pro-Adams rally:

| Great news for the women of VA!! Woot!! |
| Thanks Jeff! I put it in the Virginia Abortion Ban thread since this severely decreases the likelihood of that happening. But also a good sign for November. |
|
Great news for VA.
Unfortunately, Youngkin is only tauting his new appointment but hey still a huge win. YAY Thank you Louise L Lucas you are a true American hero. |
|
A lot of people like me, were not aware an election was
taking place |
You would know if you lived in that state senate district. The previous senator unseated Elaine Laurie for US Congress. |
| Bad news for Virginia. |
Bad news for MAGAs and forced birthers. |
Special elections are worth paying attention to generally. They are historically underfunded, rarely receive the attention they deserve, and often they’re decided by just a handful of votes. A little money goes a long way and there are a few every month. There are some In Pennsylvania and New Hampshire coming up and those state legislatures are almost dead even. |

Ha ha ha ha Joe Morrissey—- your fake non democrat anti-abortion vote doesn’t count now!!
And in June we’re gonna help Lashresce Aird defeat you in the primary so you have nothing!!! @jeff - if he asks for my IP to sue me tell him he’s already threatened to sue me and didn’t make good on it. |

I’m not sure this is unequivocally good or bad.
The state senate seat was vacated by an R who flipped a Congressional seat. The seat will also be back up for election this November. On net, I’m pretty sure that VA R’s would take that trade. |
It’s certainly not unequivocally good, because Luria was fantastic, but it’s better than the Republicans keeping the state Senate seat. And as an incumbent he’ll have an advantage going into November. |
I’m not so sure that incumbent advantage matters too much. The primary is already in June, so only a few months away. People will barely get a chance to know who he is, much less that he’s the incumbent except that there will be an “I” next to his name at the ballot box. |
| Kevin Adams was also a horrible candidate compared to Rouse; Rouse actually had political experience and some knowledge, Adams thought he could ram through with only being in the Navy. |
