I read the document once a year - the 1st week of the year.
By doing it at a time when I am not in an IEP meeting, I am able to give space to IDEA and the rights that my child has as a part of the federal law. Have you had some random person not employed by the school who is reaching out to support your child who you never authorized to have your child's records (I have). Your child's privacy is protected and this is an example of things called out in your procedural safeguards. There is clearly a lot more with regards to the process of IEPs, complaints etc. The 1st time I got the document, I did not understand what it was. I was frustrated with how meetings were conducted and realized that the school was not following guidelines. By reading it once a year, the language is sharper and enables me to be a stronger advocate. |
