My almost 3 year old son used to sleep in all the time. He’s never wake up early and would guarantee a 9am wake up on weekends. Recently, that’s changed and now he’s up around 6am ![]() |
Try the OK to wake Hatch light. Turns red for "stay in bed" and green for "ok to wake." (He is too young to comprehend a clock, IMO.) |
You can try the clock but really I think expecting a 3 year to sleep until 9 am is unrealistic. What time does he got to bed? When my DD was 3, 6 am felt luxurious. She went to bed at 8 and was up at 5. |
What time is bedtime and nap time? 6-7 feels normal to me for wake up especially if they get up for daycare. |
Yeah, 9am is fantastic--but she can expect better than 6am I think. My 3yo sleeps until 7 on weekdays |
My 8 and 11 yo still wake up at 6 am almost every day. It's very convenient on school days, and a pain in the ass on weekends. |
OP here. I’ll try the Hatch light, it looks like it could really help.
DS’s bedtime during the week is at 7:30 and he’s asleep by 8. On the weekends, he stays up later since he doesn’t need to wake up early for school. Last night, he went to bed around 9/9:30 and still woke up at 6am. I may have to resign myself to his earlier wake times but now he’s ready for a nap when that’s usually 12 for him. Just made him an early lunch and he’ll be asleep by 11 I’m sure. |
Drop the nap or cap it at an hour max. And don’t offer nap so early. You’ll reinforce that early morning wake. |
kids this age don’t just go to bed later and sleep later. Set him up for success by keeping bedtime the same time every night. |

+1 Don’t vary weekday/weekend bedtimes unless the kid is napping at daycare but not at home (that’s how it goes for my 3yo; her weekend bedtimes are really early and wake-up time is consistently 6-7 every day of the week). |
