Low follicle count during IVF

Anonymous
I'm on round two of IVF. The first time, I had 9 measurable follicles (which wasn't great) so the doctor upped my menopur to start with, but now I only have five measurable follicles. Is this just bad luck? Indicative of an underlying problem like low egg reserve? Is there anything to be done? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hi - it may very well be indicative of diminished ovarian reserve (DOR). In which case you may do better on a low-stim protocol. After three high-stim rounds, my RE switched to a low-stim protocol and I actually got more eggs for both of my low-stim rounds. The second resulted in my 11 month old baby. Not all clinics are equally good at handling DOR, so talk to your RE and do your research if you end up needing another round. (But hopefully this one is successful!!) Also, keep in mind that egg quality is as important as egg quantity, so don’t be too discouraged if you are getting good eggs even if there aren’t as many of them.

Your age/egg health will play a lot into this, too, so quality over quantity.

IVF cycles are a lot of guessing how your body may respond to the meds, unfortunately.
