Can someone help clarify for me? I'm taking my kid to get a permit soon. When filling out the link for docs, it says:
Based on the birthdate you entered, you have indicated that you are under 19 years old. If you do not have a document from the list below, your parent or legal guardian must visit DMV, when you apply, to certify Virginia residency for you. Your parent or legal guardian will need to show a photo ID and proof of his or her Virginia residency. When selecting the parent button on the page, the next page says: You are required to provide one document as secondary proof of your Virginia residency. You must give a street address. A post office box or business address is not accepted. Select a document that you will bring to DMV. So, does my kid need a secondary proof or dos the "you" refer to the parent? I don't want to show up without the right docs. Thanks! |
| You refers to the parent. Kids don't usually have the necessary documentation to prove residency in their name, so they are allowed to use yours. |

You are going with your child to get the permit. Bring the secondary proof with you. What are you confused about? |
That's what I thought, but the form is written as it is filled out by the kid. So, the you could have been them. The list does include proof of residency that some kids would have (paychecks, school report card, etc.). I figured it was better to be safe than sorry. Thank you for the helpful response. |
| So, when you get to the secondary proof of residency page, the parent name goes on the bottom? |
You said you hit the “parent button” and then got that screen so I assumed it was written for you then. It’s asking for proof of Virginia residency. Just bring it. |

Also, it literally says this to the child which you quoted:
If you do not have a document from the list below, your parent or legal guardian must visit DMV, when you apply, to certify Virginia residency for you. Your parent or legal guardian will need to show a photo ID and proof of his or her Virginia residency. It’s very clear that either the child or you brings the proof. |
For those not in the know, the secondary proof page is the same, regardless of whether the teen chooses the "parent will bring ID" button or the teen bringing their own. It isn't responsive. |
