What did your rising 11th grader do during the summer? Job? Volunteer?

Retail job, baby! This is the best time to develop work ethic and critical thinking skills on the job. Oh, and lots of SAT prep

kid 1 - worked as a camp counselor, took 1 week for a pre college program and another week for family vacation.

kid 2 - worked as a counselor-in-training for a sleepaway camp for a couple weeks, did a 1-week pre-college program, spent most of August in marching band camp, and prepping for SATs.

Where were the pre college programs?

My kid took classes at NVCC to knock out requirements she wasn't excited about during the school year. Gave her the ability to take two math classes instead.

Other kid worked.

Kid 1 worked at the same job they’d had for over a year already, just more hours. Kid 2 will do swim team and work as a coach, and might look for something else as well.

Mine also took classes as NVCC. Went into Freshman year with 15 credits.

1) Personal Finance class.
2) Doing a sport -showcases, ID clinics- and position training in an effort to be recruited.
3) DC would like to have a job but I think it will be hard to find something to let her work 1 -2 days/week. DC will be 16 this summer. Any suggestions?

Several part time jobs, one of which relates to her intended college major and one which is specialized tutoring and she makes great money. I only mention the types of jobs because it impacts the ability to do other things but thinks they are worthwhile.

Probably a class, travel, and applying for a few part time internships.

Kid 1 - coaching summer swim, swimming on summer swim team, SAT test prep, band camp

Kid 2 - Covid summer (2020) and he was trying to get recruited for baseball so lots of sports showcases and just working out. He was scheduled to do a service trip, was planning on working his retail job and swim on his summer swim team. But all three got cancelled.

Kid 3 - retail job, swimming on summer swim team, rec lacrosse for fun. Kid 3 is currently a high school senior.

Ours will be going on two family vacations, taking the personal finance class, lounging by the pool, playing around with her phone, and hopefully improving her guitar skills.
