Waiting on first tooth - almost 9 months

Anonymous
Hi all,
FTM here. Everyone, I mean everyone and even the pediatrician has been harping about baby getting her first tooth. She’s been drooling since 3-4 months and she goes in and out with chewing on things but still no tooth. I’m ok with this but getting sick of being asked nonstop! She will be 9
Months in two weeks. Is it normal?

My DD got her first tooth after turning 9 months. She didn’t get any more until she was a year, when she got three more all at once. So I guess she was trying to make up for lost time haha.

My kids didn't get them until at least 12 months. Also both still had baby teeth until 8th grade

Totally normal. Ped here and my own children didn’t have their first teeth erupt until well after 9 months. I wonder if your interpretation of your pediatrician asking about teeth as being ‘harping’ might be colored by your own worries about your child not having teeth yet?

I ask all of my patients about teeth from 6 months onwards at check ups so I can reinforce oral hygiene habits and counsel about expectations for the first dental visit. Either way, rest assured that it’s very normal not to have teeth yet!

My kid is exactly the same age and he is just beginning to get his first tooth now.

Can't remember the exact timing, but my kids were also late to get teeth and late to lose them. One had more complicated orthodontia not related to the slow tooth development, but it did mean braces through much of high school. Otherwise, it having slower tooth development wasn't any issue.

Normal! Both my kids didn’t get any teeth until after their first birthday. Some kids are just late teethers. If no teeth by 18 months, then you should ask about it but there are very few situations where there is an issue

OP here. Thank you all! This is helpful. And to the pediatrician, the harping is more from friends and family but when the Peds also asks or tells me, it’s me feeling all my worries again. Thank you for stating the reason for why it’s a reminder at each visit.

Another mom here with kids with late teeth. One kid had only 3 teeth on the bottom for ages (they usually come in pairs) before the 4th came in. Second kid didn’t lose his first tooth until end of second grade and will have baby teeth for a long time.

My son got his first tooth at 13+ months and didn't lose his first tooth until he was 8 1/2! He's 15 now and were waiting on the last of the baby teeth (just had 2 pulled) to fall out before he gets his braces. Some people are just late teethers!
