David Brooks of the NYTimes gave it a Sidney Award. |
“Undergraduate culture” is a synonym for misogyny, bad behavior masked as exploitation and inequality.
It’s time colleges are wiped clean of Greek culture and other clubs that drive division and discrimination. This needs to be done everywhere. |
Yes but they also got rid of ethnic theme houses and an outdoor-appreciation theme house. Sounds like too many administrators stirring the pot. |
It’s like humor: once it’s too PC it’s not funny anymore
That said, I don’t care much either way as it’s highly unlikely my white straight son with no stellar achievements will end up there |
Well that was a depressing read. I feel sorry for kids today. Over 70% of students describe themselves as feeling “very sad”? We’ve broken a generation of kids.
|
I think people always glamorize a part they didn’t experience. It’s complicated. I will rant about how enforces dining halls and administrative interference ruined my Alma mater’s dorm culture if you want but the idea that creativity, happiness, and self expression can only be found in the Greek system is so much BS. Also the fact that the author thinks that students who live in dorms are inherently lonely and miserable is so much projection. |
Sounds like they went after international-themed houses and the outdoor recreation house as well. It’s not just about the Greek system. |
Why invoke "white" or "straight " or male? You shoukd just have said "no stellar achievements " and been done with it. The rest betrays ignorance and bias. |
Agree, it so far left, it’s reactionary. Actually scary. |
Is it though? There are many posters here claiming their freshman are finding the dorms to be lonely places. |
I thought a lot of it was overblown but it did sound like (and I am a bit skeptical about the accuracy) that Stanford made everything too generic. My DS is looking for schools without Greek organizations but why couldn’t Stanford do something like Rice has with different college houses? |
I appreciate some of what the writer is saying (The Band sounds hilarious), but it gives me pause when he says, "Some incident would spark an investigation." Like all these incidents are trivial. But, is that really the case? Does the author have any idea what tge incidents are? |
This is a sad read. I don’t know enough about Stanford to really assess its veracity.
One could imagine replacing frats and sororities with residential colleges, as at Yale and some of the other Ivies, but if the article is taken at face value Stanford hasn’t done something similar in a way that might actually create a real sense of community as opposed to merely superficial “equity” and “fairness.” It comes across as if everything was done to protect the university administrators from criticism by leftist groups, and not to give students an opportunity to stretch and find their own niches. Again, this account could be an exaggeration. But given that Stanford is in California, where left-wing lunacy sometimes knows very few constraints, I’m inclined to give the author the benefit of the doubt. |
I know first Gen POC stanford students with no stellar achievements |
The author is female. The only thingStanford needs to reform is it’s disciplinary process so it doesn’t have another suicidal like that of Katie Meyer. |
