Why do people like Lyon Park?

Anonymous
Can someone chime in why people value living in Lyon Park, specifically families.
The schools look mediocre at best.

Why do you think the schools are mediocre?

Good community, less "keeping up with Joneses" than 22207, close to Clarendon, Charming homes, walkable.

Not as pretentious as Lyon Village but still good location.

It is a good location but why throw 2.5m+ on a new build with mediocre schools?

I lived in an np apartment there for a long time. Before the mcraftmans. It’s an easy walkable neighborhood with metro access. I wish the gentrification hadn’t crept through, would have loved to buy there.

There was another long thread about this recently. Refer to that one.

Yeah, welcome to Arlington where newcomers realize the schools suck but the locals have been brainwashed into thinking they’re amazing.

I lived near there a decade ago. Did they get rid of the dudebro frat kids who lived nearby yet?

It’s a longstanding question with no clear answer.

I grew up there so I'm biased, but it's a beautiful, friendly neighborhood with a nice layout. Easy to run up and down the streets and play with friends as a kid. The park itself is nice to have access to.

+1 My kids are just finishing up at W-L after going through Long Branch and TJ. It's been a great neighborhood for them to grow up in and we were happy with our experience with the schools.

But, things have definitely changed over time with gentrification and the challenges with the schools. It seems most of our long-term neighbors have government, non-profit, IT jobs (as do DH and I) and chose the area for its short commute and family friendly flavor, compromising on smaller/older houses to get more time with family. Now, with the new builds and high prices it's more the lawyers/lobbyists. And, for the schools, I know Long Branch's very long-term principal has retired and it sounds like there's some growing pains with the new leadership and there's the overcrowding at W-L.

There are still a lot of neighborhood events and you can't beat the location if you commute into DC but it's not the hidden gem it was when we moved in 20 years ago.

Just like FCC, but the residents of The Little City aren't ready for that conversation

It just seems charming driving through it. Too expensive for us and I don’t think we could deal with the schools, but I’ve always thought it was so cute.

Hello, I posted that thread. As I recall, the overall message was that some people prioritize walkability and safety to the extent they will pay $2.5 mil for an unattractive block.
