We're considering a trip to Hawaii with our two teens over spring break. We'll have about 11-12 days including travel. We're thinking of splitting the time between Oahu and one other island. Which would you pick for the second island? We are leaning towards the big island for the volcanoes although I don't know if the recent eruption would still affect a visit a few months from now. Any tips? Recommended activities (kids are good swimmers but will not want to spend entire days just hanging out at the beach)? Also, does anyone have experience using Costco for a Hawaii vacation package? TIA.
We went last spring break and used Costco. It worked out great. Just an FYI that if there are a few nights when you want to stay someplace you book on your own (like an airbnb) you can still do that through Costco, you just have to arrange it over the phone. We went to Maui and Kauai. I haven't been to the other islands, but we loved both the ones we visited. Keep in mind that you could easily just go to one island and stay at different parts of that one island instead of island hopping. If you go to Maui, I highly recommend https://sailtrilogy.com/ for an excursion.
Re the volcanos, we were in Hawaii over Xmas, the volcanoes are not currently erupting, and the national park is mostly open. I believe most of it was open even during the eruptions!
The Big island is fantastic and has 8 of 13 ecosystems. So, even if the volcanos are not erupting, you'll have plenty to do.
Our family loves Hawaii but the Big Island is not our favorite. Although it is admittedly very commercial, Maui is our favorite.
Costco is great for Hawaii. We booked just hotel and car for Kauai. (We booked Maui on our own for the first week of our trip.) The hotel was a great rate for 4 star and we ended up with a beautiful partial ocean view. The car was upgraded at the airport despite booking a full sized sedan. We just got back and received a $350 Costco shop card.
March is the coldest water of the year so I would
Would not go to Kauai. Oahu for a few days. Then Maui or Big Island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a 2 hour drive from the resorts so I recommend HNL to KOA inter island, drive to the park, stay 2 or 3 nights, then finish up on the Kohala coast. |
