I thought Colson Whitehead's Harlem Shuffle really depicted its characters well

Not read that book but someone here recommended The Old Woman With The Knife and it is fantastic, 10/10 great read and character development.
It is About an old lady assassin considering retirement |
| Sun Also Rises/Hemingway. Character development is about as good as it gets. One of the chief reasons it's considered enduring, brilliant fiction. |

Yes, that's a good one. Especially with its 20+ years time frame. |
Boy, I really enjoyed that book. I read in in '21 and at the time I also enjoyed Leave the World Behind, The Lincoln Highway, Great Circle, Our Country Friends. (I keep of list of what I read by date/month.) |
| PP here ^^ Razorblade Tears by SA Cosby is kind of similar but way grittier with less likable characters. |
Cracking good book. Not to hijack the thread, but the English TV series ENDEAVOR really draws its characters exceptionally well....The BBC, in general, produces high quality shows. |
