I know this has been discussed before, but...
We need to start making decisions on planning for the summer and my DC will need to be around and available for the second session of summer classes. It looks like last year that session was 7/20-8/9. How confident can we be planning around those dates? Does anybody have a sense of how much they change year-to-year? |
Anecdata: We did the central online summer school the past 2 summers, and the dates shifted a few days between the two years - a Monday start date the first time, and a Wednesday start date the 2nd time. It's virtual, so you can log in from anywhere with wifi. Also, the class meetings are generally MWF. |
Thank you! I think all we really have at this point is anecdata, so it helps. We are looking at planning some international travel, internships and/or summer learning experiences, potentially abroad. So even virtual it would probably not be feasible to have both happening at the same time. I'm generally a defender of MCPS and understand that they can't have exact specifics of classes offered and teachers until later in the year. But it sure would be nice if they could give us the timeframe early.... |
| It depends on where abroad, OP. My kids did part of the year virtually in France during the pandemic. They had free mornings, then school from lunch til dinner. You don't want to go to Asia, of course, but Europe and Africa could work. However I understand that it doesn't make for comfortable planning! |
I wouldn't look at last year's dates. Instead, look at this year's calendar and bound the problem. Tuesday June 20 is the last day for teachers (finish grades) and 6/21 to 6/23 are listed as emergency closure make-up days. If we don't need those make-up days, they could start summer school Session I on Wednesday 6/21, but I think Monday 6/26 is more likely. This puts the end of I as 7/14. So, the earliest for Session II would be Monday 7/17, with end 8/4. It is possible that they could start a week later, or start Session I on Wednesday and have a couple days break, or have a week break. So I would also consider going in to the week ending 8/11 possible. However the fall sports practices begin Wednesday 8/9, so I would guess that session II last day has to be 8/8. Block out 7/12 through 8/8, to capture possible mid-week start or end, but 7/17 to 8/4 is probably the 3 weeks. |
Impressive analysis! |
Thanks. I was putting in the 2023-24 calendar in my phone anyway, so I too could plan some things for next year.

OP here. Thanks for this! I'm a bit bummed as I was hoping to be able to bank on having at least a month from school getting out until Session II starting. But better safe than sorry! |
