It fills me with unspeakable dread and fear to be even saying this...But--
We have an almost 18 hour long flight (with 1 stop halfway through) upcoming a few days after Christmas. I'll be going solo with my 4 year old son, who is on the autism spectrum (although high functioning) and is still not fully potty trained. He usually does OK with going #2 at home, but pee is a an immense struggle. I suspect the new environment of being on a plane (this is his 2nd time flying, first long-haul trip) will necessitate us putting potty training on the backburner. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom for how to go about this? Do we do diapers? Pull-ups? Some combination of both? This flight may cause me to become an alcoholic. |
Pull ups are much easier to change standing in an airplane bathroom, I doubt he will fit on the changing table so I would do that. |
I would don't put PT on the back burner and take him every hour while awake and when he wakes up/before bed. Be very consistent about it. He may not be able to know when he needs to go or not. I'd put pull-ups on him. |
I’ve done this many a time with a three year old. Take the kid to the bathroom and use pull ups. Easy peasy. Don’t even have to lie the kid down on the changing table. |
Agree on pull ups. If it makes sense for his activity level, an hourly trip to the bathroom might be a good idea as well. It could be a novelty for him. |
Pull ups. I used to put my just potty trained child in them on flights/long car rides, just in case. |
Stop putting diapers and pull ups on him and he will learn. |
NP. Clearly you don’t have experience with a child with ASD. |
I always found diapers easier than pull-ups and I changed my kid standing up. |
+1 If you think there is a chance of poop the regular diapers hold that much better as well. |
NP here. Any tips for getting your kid to use the airplane toilet? My newly potty trained 2.5 year old was terrified and refused to use it. I put her in a diaper for the plane ride and it took about 2 hours of convincing for her to just pee in the diaper since the toilet was a no go. I had gotten one of those inserts for the toilet seat so she wouldn’t fall in but it just wasn’t going to happen. She really had a hard time peeing in her diaper then wanted to he changed immediately. It was rough on a cross country flight. We fly back home again in a few days and I’d some tips. |
Is he verbal? Can you start talking about it now as a positive and exciting thing? Maybe you can “practice” with so,w diapers and talk about how cute airplane bathrooms are and how the airlines can fit everything in a tiny space. Play “airplane bathroom “ in the shower or something. |
I have a neurotypical almost four year old who is generally potty trained but she finds airplane toilets terrifying. So I give her the choice of pull-ups or peeing in the airplane toilet, and she opts for pull-ups. |
I would think pull-ups would be harder than a diaper because wouldn't he have to take off his pants and shoes? With a diaper just have him stand up and you out the diaper on standing up. Practice at home a few times. |
Even if this was going to work, an 18 hour flight is not the time to be doing it. I would do pull-ups, OP, and have him try to go potty in the airplane bathroom unless it freaks him out too much. Basically, just do whatever is least distressing for you and the kid. Good luck! |
