| My 6 year old car needs a transmission fix that will cost $4k. This is my first car but I assume this is not normal? Wondering if this is a bad sign and I should sell the car before additional costs arise. Or is this just part of ownership when cars get older? |
| Shop around for estimates. |
| I did that already. Didn't vary much. |
|
What kind of car is it?
What’s the current value? Have you gotten a second opinion? A brand-new transmission costs anything from $1,000 to $7,000+. Therefore, if the current worth of your vehicle ranges from $8,000 to $10,000, replacing the transmission will be worth it. But if your vehicle is under or within the transmission range, it won't make much sense to replace its transmission. |
| It is an SUV with a value of $17,000-19,000. I do not need a new transmission but a repair to the transmission. I am going to fix it, just wondering if I should look to move on after. |
| We paid $7000 for a new transmission on a 2016 with a lot more miles - maybe 90,000? - a year ago. Partly because the new/used car market was too horrible to replace it, partly because we always planned to drive this thing into the ground, and also because we are expecting an unusual windfall next year. It depends on a lot of stuff. |
| What vehicle and what is the specific repair? |
|
Did you buy it used? Did you keep up with preventive maintenance?
What type of car? I'm guessing not a Honda or Toyota . |
| $4,000 is a lot cheaper than buying a brand new car. |
| I bought it with 5000 miles on it in 2016. It is a Buick Enclave. Yes I kept up with maintenance. |
| Disappointing that a car with such low mileage and such few years would need a transmission fix. Maybe research mechanical and electronic issues for that model, and find out whether it's a problematic car in general. |
| $4k for transmission repair, not replacement is pretty expensive. I wonder if the transmission might have another problem after the repair. |
| let's say you keep the car another 5 years, is a car payment of $83 a month. a new car payment for a car purchased at 30k is 625 a month. |
10:44 here and ours was a 2016 GMC Acadia, so essentially the same car. We bought ours with around 10K miles on it in 2017 and we also kept up with maintenance. |
| And I was upset when the transmission went at about 250,000 miles on one of our vehicles. |
