Wow! That's awful. I hope her kids aren't too traumatised, though don't know ho they could not be.

If you are perturbed because the assailants jumped out of their car and began PUNCHING A CHILD in an effort to steal the family's $ coats,

then you are a pearl-clutcher.

This one incident is an anecdote from one incident in one small area and doesn’t represent data. These things do happen in cities, however it’s important to remember that crime is actually low in relative terms and you are more likely to die riding your bicycle from being hit by a car than killed or violently assaulted by a stranger.

Um, I mean that doesn't mean that this incident isn't absolutely horrifying. WTF is wrong with you?

If you really mean "more likely to die from eye rolling while watching you try to work bicycles and your war on cars into every thread, even when irrelevant" then we're in agreement.

Who the hell cares about data? If this had happened to you, or your sister and her family, or someone you know, you sure as hell wouldn't be here espousing stupid points like "crime is actually low in relative terms." Really?

Is this you, Mayor Bowser, or your PR gal?

No one died.
That's why you have insurance.
Crime is higher rural areas.
Anything I missed?

I lived in Bloomingdale for years (and loved it, fwiw).

I had a coworker who lived on the block where this happened who used to tell me how quiet it was, “like the suburbs,” because further south where I lived was apparently uncivilized.
