WWYD: I got a chocolate mousse cake at Costco for Christmas. The Sell By date is Dec 23. Should I freeze it or just leave it in the fridge until the 25th? A google search says the cake freezes great.
(There will be other desserts and yes I am making something too. I have several family members who love this cake so it was requested. I had no choice but to get the cake this early.) Thanks! |

You have no choice but to eat the cake now and buy another one for Christmas. Can't believe this is even a thread!!
Seriously, though, I think the cake is fine in the fridge or freezing. I'd probably leave it in the fridge but others who are less conservative would freeze. Fine either way, in my opinion. |
Just adding, in case it isn't obvious - "Sell by" is not the same as 'will go bad on this day.' It's not fish. |
Op here: Ha yes my kids keep asking about the cake and begging for a taste. But there is no way I am going back to Costco again before Christmas. I don’t have it in me. The trip to Costco and Trader Joe’s yesterday about broke me! |
| Sell by is not the same as eat by. It will be fine on the 25th. |
| That cake has enough chemicals to preserve an elephant. It’s not going to spoil anytime soon. |

Yrs, op, magically at 12:01 am on Drc. 24 your cake will not be safe to eat
Seriously there are a ton of preservatives. You'll be fine for a hoid long while. We're not talking fresh caught salmon or unpasteurized goat milk. |
| It’s fine and will not kill you. It’s a cake, not a piece of raw meat. Put it in the freezer. |
I think if it were full of preservatives, the sell by date would be way further out. OP, I'd freeze it if I were you. |
