I thought they were trying to eliminate trapped players? Most August birthdays I know are in the class below. Not to mention was 8/1-7/31 for the longest time. What a bunch of idiots.

I am happy with Sept 1st. My daughter is August birthday and starts on a top team in California which school is Sept 1st cutoff. This would ensures she plays with her team she always had instead of being pressured to play as the oldest with a bunch of kids a grade down. Maybe she is weird, she wants to play on her team she always has.

August 1st cutoff would cause so many issues for the majority of States with Sept 1st cut off.

I can only assume those upset with Sept 1st are in those States that have August 1st school cutoff. Best solution would be let August kids play with their grade but that might be tough to work out. Those kids can always just play up SY friends of they want. My daughter would have happily done that if the cutoff was August 1st.

Let’s just go with grad year for U16-18.

Bunch of losers with a wishful thinking so your mediocre kids can be the oldest. It is just pathetic.

How would the ecosystem be affected if MLSAcademies were the only BY league left? Do the academies take kids from MLSNext only to look at for the Academies? The MLS Academy in our area rakes ecnl kids too, so asking how that system works in other markets.

Nope. They’re trying to increase participation. And because the majority of states use 9/1 for when kids are required to do to school - that’s the date they chose to align with.

I don’t see how one league that is u13-u19, can be the lone holdout in all of this. MLS academies take kids from wherever they can find them, as they should.

Then they’re trying to increase participation by allowing kids in the same grade to play together. So there should be some waiver or exception for those Aug kids to play with their school grade. And kids are not required to do school by the school cutoff.

This is a really dumb one. What August kid is ever going to participate in soccer at all if when they go to sign up for the Kindergarten soccer team they are told by the league “oh sorry, you can’t play with your classmates on this team, you will have to find a first grade team that has room for you and where your kid knows nobody! But we still want you to participate in soccer. Good luck!” What a joke.

And importantly, states with 9/1 school cutoffs do NOT require August kids to enroll just days after turning 5. It is not a requirement. It just means that if you do want to enroll in Kindergarten that year you must turn 5 by 9/1.

I love the thinking of those guys, "no no, my Jan birth kid is amazing and deserves everything they've been given - moving the date won't matter because those Q4 kids are naturally terrible".

Why would EC and L want to increase participation?

College rosters are shrinking, a number of these programs will either leave division one or be eliminated, so why would you want to increase the pool of applicants when the number of seats is shrinking?

Sounds like a great way to destroy or dilute your business model and strategic advantage.

You know there are tons of April-August kids that are the best on their team, play a year or two up etc…

Those folks can easily fall into either camp as far as opinions on this go.

It’s not all Jan v Dec… OP is right, struck dog yelps.
