Why is this so much more motivating?

To bundle up and run outside at the track than I ever am to exercise in the comfort of the gym?

For a month I’ve been making myself make a trip to the track to run, and I’ve been loving it and even looking forward to it, despite it being cold and windy out in the open. It’s a strange accomplishment I don’t feel after a trip to the gym.

Just curious what it could be that is so motivating that I’m not finding indoors.

Huh. I said I would do that today but it feels so windy I am starting to lose motivation to head out.

I think there is something really nice about being outside. We spend so much time indoors that is feels nice getting out.

When I ran a lot winter was my favorite season to run. There was something about getting out on the coldest days that made me feel accomplished.

I love fresh air too and being alone in my thoughts/audio book. It’s kind of meditative for me. Gyms are too noisy.

Running in harsh conditions makes me feel like a bada$$.

I prefer it because I can actually move (even just in circles around a track) and guesstimate how far I’ve gone and how much further I want to go. Gym is always ‘surely that was ten minutes and 2/3 a mile’ and you check and it was 40 seconds 😫🤦‍♀️

Because running outside is way better than running in place on a dreadmill. I can run over an hour outside but can't do more than 10 minutes inside. BTW you shouldn't do a long run on a track - you will spend almost half of the run on a one way turn. Check out Coach Bennett and Nike Run Club for more tips.

I run outside year round. I gave away my treadmill and don’t miss it at all. I’ve learned to dress for both extremes of temperature and everything in between. I run outside if it’s sprinkling or snowing but not if it’s actually raining like yesterday in DC area. I love the fresh air and freedom.

Right! I can’t explain it but it’s been my favorite part of the day! I worry when snow or icy conditions start. I dread the gym again.

Any tips for the snow/ice?

I once ran 10 miles around a track because it was the only safe place to do a long run where I was at the time. Awful. Sure built mental toughness, though.

Agree!

If people want to complain about how cold it is - you have earned the right to be smug

Agree. I used to run in Feb at 5 in the morning with a friend and after that was done I’d feel like, welp, whatever happens in the rest of today is all gravy.
